PLN Confirms End of Rolling Blackouts in Java Since 21 June

PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasodjo has confirmed that rolling blackouts in Java ended on 21 June 2026, with the company now focused on strengthening system reliability to prevent future disruptions. “The electricity system condition in Java has seen no more rolling blackouts since 21 June 2026,” Darmawan stated during a hearing with Commission XII of the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 July 2026. He explained that the grid reinforcement was carried out under the direction of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources through several measures to maintain supply reliability in Java. One key step was the allocation of additional medium to high-calorie coal, specifically a minimum of 4,500 kilocalories, prepared exclusively for PLN. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources provided an extra 1.8 million tonnes of supply in July, beyond the regular allocation. From August to December 2026, the additional coal supply will reach 3 million tonnes per month, increasing the system’s capacity by approximately 5 gigawatts above the existing 35.9 GW. Darmawan noted that this additional supply has made the Java electricity system more reliable than before. He also revealed that an extra 4.6 GW of power supply will come online in 2027, further strengthening the Java grid. He pointed out that national coal production is currently dominated by low-calorie coal, while production of medium and high-calorie coal continues to decline. “With this, the electricity supply constraints that previously occurred in Java have been resolved and the rolling blackouts have been successfully addressed,” he said.
