PLN Confirms End of Rolling Blackouts in Java, Coal Supply Strengthened
The President Director of PT PLN (Persero), Darmawan Prasodjo, has ensured that there will no longer be rolling blackouts within the Java electricity system. The company is also strengthening system reliability to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
“The condition of the electricity system, particularly in Java, has seen no more rolling blackouts since 21 June 2026,” stated Darmawan during a Hearing with Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Thursday (2/7/2026).
Darmawan noted that PLN is enhancing the reliability of the electricity system on Java Island through several measures prepared in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
One such measure involves increasing the supply of medium to high-calorific coal, specifically above 4,500 calories. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has allocated an additional supply of 1.8 million tonnes on top of the existing supply for July 2026.
“Furthermore, there will be an additional 3 million tonnes per month from August to December. Consequently, there will be an increase in available power supply capacity by 5 gigawatts (GW) above the existing 35.9 GW capacity,” he said.
According to Darmawan, this additional supply will make the electricity system on Java Island more reliable. Additionally, in 2027, PLN is expected to receive a further 4.6 GW of electricity supply. This capacity increase is believed to further enhance the reliability of the Java power system.
Darmawan acknowledged that national coal production is currently dominated by low-calorific coal, while the production of medium to high-calorific coal tends to be declining.
“With these steps, the energy supply constraints that previously occurred on Java Island can be overcome, ensuring that the rolling blackouts have been successfully resolved,” he concluded.
