PLN: Coal Supply for Power Plants Secure Until End of 2026

PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasodjo has confirmed the availability of medium-calorie coal supplies for power generation. He stated that the supply is guaranteed until December 2026.

According to him, the additional supply has directly improved system reliability. “This has made the Java system, which we previously admitted was experiencing rolling blackouts, now far more reliable,” he said during a hearing with Commission XII of the House of Representatives on Thursday, 2 July 2026.

Darmawan said the additional supply has restored the reliability of the electricity system, particularly in Java, thereby avoiding the risk of further rolling blackouts.

“In July, there is an additional 1.8 million tonnes of coal with a calorific value of 4,500 and above. Then from August to December, there is an additional 3 million tonnes from existing sources,” Darmawan explained.

Darmawan acknowledged that the Java electricity system had experienced rolling blackouts due to limited supplies of medium-calorie coal.

He explained that the issue was triggered by a shift in the composition of national coal production. In recent years, production of low-calorie coal has continued to increase, while production of medium and high-calorie coal has declined.

Yet, according to Darmawan, most power plants in the Java system are designed to use medium-calorie coal. To address the shortfall, PLN requested an additional supply of 4,500-calorie coal from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This additional supply is on top of the previously established allocation.

“The ministry then fulfilled it through an assignment scheme,” Darmawan said.
