PLN: Coal Supply Crisis Main Factor in Java Power Disruptions
State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has revealed that a crisis in the supply of medium-calorie coal is the main factor affecting the power system in Java, leading to rolling blackouts in several areas.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that medium-calorie coal is an essential requirement for several coal-fired power plants (PLTU) that form the backbone of Java’s electricity supply. The supply disruption has impacted the plants’ ability to maintain system reliability.
To address the situation, PLN is accelerating the contracting process with coal suppliers that have received government assignments so that primary energy supplies can quickly reach the power plants.
“We also appreciate the coal suppliers who have received government assignments and have signed contracts with PT PLN (Persero) and our partners’ power plants. In addition, we are speeding up the contract signing process with coal suppliers, especially medium-calorie coal suppliers that have obtained government assignments,” Darmawan said in a statement on Saturday (20/6/2026).
PLN is also conducting intensive coordination with the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal to expedite the administrative process and distribution of coal supplies to various power plants.
“In this process, we are coordinating intensively and continuously with the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal team so that the contract signing process can proceed quickly,” he said.
Along with this acceleration, medium-calorie coal supplies have begun flowing to several PLTUs in Java, both those operated by PLN and Independent Power Producers (IPP). “Currently, the distribution process for medium-calorie coal is beginning to flow to PLTUs in several areas of Java, both PLN-owned PLTUs and those owned by our partners or Independent Power Producers (IPP),” Darmawan said.
For the western part of Java, supplies have started being distributed to PLTU Lontar, PLTU Labuan, PLTU Suralaya Units 1 to 5, PLTU Jawa 7, PLTU Jawa 9 and 10, and PLTU Indramayu. Meanwhile, in eastern Java, supplies are beginning to flow to PLTU Paiton Units 1 and 2, PLTU Paiton Unit 9, PLTU Rembang, PLTU Pacitan, and PLTU Tanjung Awar-Awar.
PLN hopes that the arrival of coal supplies at these power plants will accelerate the recovery of Java’s electricity system. The company is also continuing to take corrective measures to ensure the power supply returns to normal and is reliable for the public.
