PLN and Yogyakarta Government Collaborate on Expanding EV Charging Infrastructure

PT PLN (Persero) Unit Induk Distribusi (UID) Yogyakarta and the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Transportation Agency are finalising plans to expand and distribute public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU) across strategic areas to support the increasing use of electric vehicles and accelerate the clean energy transition in the transportation sector. The collaboration was discussed during a meeting between PLN UID Yogyakarta General Manager Deri Prasetio Utomo and DIY Transportation Agency Head Chrestina Erni Widyastuti.

Chrestina stated that the DIY government is actively promoting environmentally friendly transportation as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions, particularly in the Malioboro area. She welcomed PLN’s offer to collaborate on building SPKLU infrastructure, noting that the availability of charging stations is crucial to support the growing number of electric vehicles. She also expressed appreciation for PLN’s support in developing electric becaks, with an initial provision of 50 units planned, and hopes this number will increase annually to help realise greener transport and accelerate emission reductions across the region.

PLN UID Yogyakarta General Manager Deri Prasetio Utomo highlighted the positive growth trend of electric vehicles in Yogyakarta, driven by high public mobility and the tourism sector, with charging activity increasing fivefold compared to the previous period. PLN currently operates 32 SPKLU machines across 30 strategic locations in Yogyakarta City and the regencies of Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul, including an Ultra Fast Charging hub at the PLN UID Yogyakarta office. Deri emphasised PLN’s commitment to strengthening coordination with the regional government to ensure charging infrastructure is reliably and evenly distributed, supporting a robust electric vehicle ecosystem and reinforcing Yogyakarta’s position as a green, modern, and sustainable tourist destination.
