PLN and The Climate Group to Develop Green Energy Products
PT PLN (Persero) is strengthening the development of green energy products through a partnership with The Climate Group, which oversees the RE100 initiative. The agreement was signed during the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday (6/10/2026).
This collaboration comes as corporate demand for electricity that is not only reliable but also sourced from renewable energy continues to rise. This trend is also a key consideration for global investors when determining locations and developing business activities.
Special Envoy to the President for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, stated that Indonesia’s geographical position and rich domestic energy resources are vital assets for attracting green investment. Indonesia possesses various renewable energy sources, ranging from geothermal and solar to hydropower, which can be developed to support sustainable energy needs.
“We are a peace-loving nation, which attracts investors and friends from all corners of the world. Indonesia is blessed with geothermal, sunlight, and water resources, including hydro power,” said Hashim, as quoted on Wednesday (7/10/2026).
President Director of PLN, Darmawan Prasodjo, noted that this renewable energy potential serves as a foundation for supporting economic growth. According to him, the partnership with The Climate Group is aimed at bridging the gap between the needs of global companies for renewable energy and the green energy products developed by PLN. “PLN does not only provide electricity, but also builds an energy ecosystem capable of meeting investment needs and industrial growth,” said Darmawan.
The demand for green energy in Indonesia is evident from the growth of PLN’s Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) customers. An REC is a certificate indicating that a certain amount of electricity used by a customer is linked to renewable energy generation.
In 2025, the number of PLN REC customers reached 18,715 with an energy volume of 6.43 TWh, an increase from 7,354 customers with a volume of 5.38 TWh in 2024. This demand comes from various industrial sectors, including mining, manufacturing, chemicals, pulp and paper, food, and data centres.
This growth indicates a shift in the energy consumption patterns of the business world. Companies are no longer just considering the certainty of power supply, but are increasingly paying attention to the origin of energy and the transparency of emission calculations. “In addition to needing reliable electricity, the business world now requires electricity that is greener, more transparent, and globally accountable,” said Darmalar.
PLN Director of Retail and Commerce, M. Fahrur Rozy, stated that The Climate Group plays a vital role in the global renewable energy ecosystem through the RE100 initiative, which brings together over 400 global companies committed to using renewable energy.
According to Rozy, the partnership with The Climate Group can assist PLN in mapping the renewable energy needs of companies already operating in Indonesia or those planning to invest. “Through our partnership with The Climate Group, we aim to strengthen the link between the growing demand for green energy and the development of renewable energy solutions in Indonesia, as well as opening new investment opportunities,” said Rozy.
The collaboration extends beyond mapping customer needs; PLN and The Climate Group will also develop several studies and initiatives related to green energy products.
Rozy mentioned that both parties will conduct studies, technical assistance, and human resource competency enhancement. The cooperation also includes studies on the implementation of Carbon Economic Value (NEK), increasing the transparency and credibility of emission calculations in REC transactions, and research into electricity policy.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Climate Group, Helen Clarkson, stated that Indonesia has immense potential to develop into a renewable energy powerhouse. However, developing this potential requires business investment to build new clean energy projects.
Helen noted that investment is necessary so that Indonesia can provide reliable and affordable renewable electricity for the business world. This is also linked to industrial competitiveness, as global companies increasingly factor their carbon footprint into their business activities.
“Indonesia has all the potential to become a major force in renewable energy, but to optimise this potential, significant business investment is required for new clean energy projects,” said Helen.
She added that The Climate Group will work alongside RE100 members and PLN to drive the development of renewable energy that can support Indonesia’s energy security and economic growth.
