Plastic waste remains one of the primary threats to Indonesia’s coastal and marine ecosystems. To support the preservation of marine biodiversity, PT PLN (Persero) has collaborated with environmental communities for a beach clean-up action in Makassar.

The activity, organised by PLN’s Project Management Centre (Pusmanpro) Construction Management Implementation Unit (UPMK) V alongside the Beach Clean Up Makassar community, took place at Pantai Biru, Makassar, to mark International Biodiversity Day. Approximately 7do75 participants, comprising PLN employees and experts, participated in removing plastic waste and debris from the coastal area.

Ridwan Harjono, Manager of PLN Pusmanpro UPMK V, stated that environmental preservation is a key aspect of the company’s sustainability agenda. “PLN’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated not only through the provision of reliable electricity for the public but also through various initiatives that support environmental preservation. This action is a form of implementing the ESG principles that we consistently promote to provide long-term benefits for society and the environment,” Ridwan said in a press release on Tuesday.

He added that community involvement is a crucial factor in maintaining coastal areas that are vulnerable to waste pollution. Such collaborations are also seen as a way to expand education regarding the importance of waste management and the protection of marine ecosystems.

The founder of Beach Clean Up Makassar, Alda Puspita Sari, noted that cooperation with various parties is necessary to strengthen environmental preservation movements in coastal regions. “We greatly appreciate the renewed collaboration with PLN. The involvement of the business world in environmental preservation movements shows that the effort to protect coasts and biodiversity is a shared responsibility. We hope such collaborations can inspire more parties to contribute,” said Alda.

The beach clean-up action is part of an effort to raise public awareness regarding the impact of waste on marine ecosystems. In addition to disrupting marine biota habitats, waste pollution also has the potential to degrade the quality of coastal environments, which serve as a livelihood for local communities.
