PLN Addresses Power Outages in Several Regions
State-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has assured that the Java electricity system is currently operating in a safe and controlled condition, despite a number of operational issues that have impacted power supply in several regions. PLN issued the statement in response to rolling blackouts that have occurred in a number of areas recently. The outages had sparked various speculations, including rumours regarding dwindling coal supplies for power plants.
PLN’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and TJSL, Gregorius Adi Trianto, stated that the company continues to undertake various efforts to maintain the reliability of electricity supply and provide the best service to all customers. “PLN confirms that the Java electricity system is currently operating and well-controlled, although there are operational issues that have resulted in reduced electricity supply in several areas,” Greg told CNBC Indonesia on Friday (12/6/2026).
He subsequently denied the occurrence of a blackout as had been widely discussed. For the disruptions experienced by some customers, PLN offered an apology and confirmed it is continuing to take handling measures to maintain the reliability of the electricity system. “We also urge customers to follow information developments through official communication channels, including at local PLN units,” said Greg.
On a separate occasion, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia also denied that the power outages occurring in several areas of Java, particularly West Java, were caused by a coal shortage. According to Bahlil, the outages were purely due to problems with the power plant machinery. “As of today, tonight (Thursday 11/6/2026) we also held a meeting with PLN to discuss this issue. The issue of coal scarcity is not true, because our assignment is already 170 million tonnes,” Bahlil said at the Presidential Palace Complex, quoted on Friday (12/6/2026).
“It is just that there are some troubles in several machines as conveyed by PLN and they will be resolved in the near future,” he said. Bahlil confirmed that there were indeed power outages in several areas of Java. “Yesterday there were indeed (outages). It is not yet optimal, we are accelerating the recovery,” he answered. Previously, PLN issued an official announcement regarding these outages via social media on Wednesday (10/6/2026). At least 14 areas in West Java were affected by the rolling blackouts from Wednesday.
