PT PLN (Persero) North Sumatra Development Unit (UIP Sumbagut) is targeting the construction of a 140-kilometre High Voltage Overhead Line (SUTT) in the West-South Coast region of Aceh, specifically from Tapaktuan to Subulussalam, to strengthen electricity reliability in the province.

“This project is a concrete implementation of the Aceh Electricity Infrastructure Strengthening Plan, in accordance with the 202lar-2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL),” said Zulfan M. Jamil, Manager of Communications and Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) of PLN UID Aceh, in Banda Aceh on Thursday.

He explained that the SUTT project in the West-South Coast area of Aceh is currently entering the land acquisition process. Once this stage is completed, work will proceed directly to the construction phase.

According to the grand design of the 2025-2034 RUPTL, this development is a strategic step for the electricity sector in the westernmost part of Indonesia. By connecting the SUTT from Tapaktuan in South Aceh to Subulussalam, electricity distribution will be linked via two main routes; if a disruption occurs in one of the existing systems on the East Coast, power can be supplied through the West-South Coast Aceh network.

PLN added that the construction of the SUTT network in this region is part of an effort to strengthen mitigation against flash floods and landslides, similar to the incidents in late November 2025 that toppled 14 SUTT towers and caused power outages in the region.

The company welcomed the progress of this strategic infrastructure development, noting that the positive impacts will be felt directly by customers.

“The presence of this 150 KV SUTT will strengthen electricity reliability in Aceh, because if the Aceh transmission network is connected, it will create a looping system, allowing power to flow from both the East Coast and the West-South Coast,” he said.

Zulfan added that the synergy of this development is highly anticipated to ensure that the people of Aceh no longer experience widespread blackouts during extreme weather or disruptions to one side of the transmission line.

“We hope that all processes and stages can proceed smoothly so that the presence of this SUTT will increase electricity reliability in Tanah Rencong,” he said.

PLN has called upon all parties and stakeholders to support the smooth construction of the SUTT in the West-South Coast region of Aceh. Robust electricity infrastructure is believed to be able to drive regional economic growth, with benefits felt directly by the community.

Currently, the total capacity of the Aceh electricity system is considered very secure, standing at 1,049 MW with a peak load of 638 MW. Under these conditions, the Aceh electricity system maintains a power reserve margin of 411 MW.
