Several legislators voiced this during interruptions at the Jakarta DPRD plenary meeting on Thursday (30/4/2026). PDI-P faction member Agustina Hermanto of the Jakarta DPRD expressed appreciation to the Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta along with their teams for realising various programmes, including free schools. She noted that the number of free schools has increased from 40 in 2024 to 103 this year.

“We appreciate it, and if possible, it could be increased further to 200 schools in the future. But the most important thing is to ensure this programme is on target,” said Tina at the Jakarta DPRD plenary meeting.

She emphasised that the free school programme should truly be provided to underprivileged communities who have not yet received educational assistance. According to her, the Jakarta Provincial Government currently has several educational assistance schemes, from public schools and the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) to free private schools.

“The hope is that all Jakarta children, especially those who are underprivileged, can access education. Social assistance must not continue to miss its targets,” she stated.

In agreement, PKS faction member M Subki of the DPRD also appreciated the free school policy that has been running. However, he reminded that the programme’s coverage should be expanded, including to madrasah-based schools.

“There are also madrasahs in Jakarta under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. They are also Jakarta residents and deserve attention. There should be no discrimination,” said Subki.

Meanwhile, PAN faction member Lukmanul Hakim of the DPRD highlighted the still high number of school dropouts in Jakarta. He assessed that the determination of free school locations needs evaluation to truly reach needed areas.

“There are still many school dropouts, for example in Cengkareng. This must be a serious concern. The determination of free school points must be accurate,” he said.
