Plaza Senayan nears completion
JAKARTA (JP): Plaza Senayan, a new exclusive shopping complex being built at a cost of over US$100 million, is scheduled to open on Nov. 15 near Senayan stadium in Central Jakarta.
The three-story Senayan shopping center is being constructed by a consortium of PT Aditya Wirabakti, a company co-owned by Hashim Djojohadikusumo and Titi Prabowo, Japan-based Kajima Overseas Pte. Ltd. and the Senayan Sport Center Management Board (BPGS). The complex, which covers an area of 20 hectares, will be equipped with various facilities, including a 470-unit apartment complex, three office towers and a luxury hotel.
Shuichi Ohishi, Plaza Senayan's property manager, told The Jakarta Post yesterday that PT Aditya Wirabakti holds 30 percent of all shares, with the other 70 percent held by Kajima and BPGS.
Kajima, which has been involved in infrastructure projects in Indonesia for over 35 years, won the bid to build Plaza Senayan in 1988. "The project will be built under a BOT (Build Operate and Transfer) system over 40 years," Ohishi said.
Ohishi said Kajima, which was established in 1840, has a long history in the construction business. In Indonesia the company has been involved in such construction projects such as the Asahan hydroelectric power plant project in North Sumatra and the Wisma Nusantara Building on Jl. Thamrin.
The shopping center, billed as one of the largest in Asia, claims to have already sold 90 percent of its spaces to both local and international companies, including Metro Department Store, Hero Super market and the 21 multi-cinema moviehouse group.
According to shopping center manager Jan E. Peardon, the Plaza Senayan fashion center will feature international designers.
"We have a very wide range of collections in our fashion center," Peardon said.
Its location and architectural design with a rotunda as its centerpiece sets the Plaza Senayan apart from the others, she added.
"It will be for upper-middle class consumers. We are looking for a broader family market, business people as well as fashion shoppers," Peardon said.
To support the project, she said, her company will employ 4,500 local employees.
Special training will be given to the retail staff by a professional management consultant, PT Satyatama Graha Tara, in association with Brooke Hillier Parker, she said.
Construction of one of the three offices and two apartment towers will start at the end of this year and is expected to be finished in 1997.
Megamall Pluit, another exclusive shopping center, is also being built at a similar cost in Pluit, North Jakarta, and is scheduled to open in December. (01)
