Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to connect Plaza Senayan and Senayan City via an underground passage. The move aims to facilitate pedestrian access while reducing traffic congestion in the Senayan area. Pramono stated that the two shopping centres have remained unconnected due to long-standing ego issues between the parties involved. The Jakarta Provincial Government is now pushing for the immediate realisation of this connectivity. “For Senayan City and Plaza Senayan, I am requiring them to be connected underground. Their egos have never met from the start,” Pramono said in the SCBD area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday. According to Pramono, the connection would benefit both malls, as visitors could move between locations without crossing the street, thereby better organising traffic flow in the vicinity. He has also prepared measures should the two managements fail to agree on constructing the connecting passage. “I told them, if you do not want to be connected, fine, we will raise your taxes because you are disrupting traffic. That is how we work. So we do not need to make a fuss; just raise their taxes, and they will surely be willing to negotiate because it is mutually beneficial for both of them,” he stated. Pramono views the connection between Plaza Senayan and Senayan City as part of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to build inter-area connectivity. He believes pedestrian infrastructure development is key to creating a more comfortable and people-friendly city. A similar project is already underway in the Bundaran HI area, where an underground passage currently connects Hotel Pullman, Grand Hyatt, and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski to the Bundaran HI MRT station. The plan is to extend this passage to the Dukuh Atas area, integrating it with various public transport modes.
