Plans for Mount Ungaran Geothermal Power Plant Must Be Assessed Objectively

REPUBLICA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The development of clean energy, including the planned Mount Ungaran Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP), needs to be viewed objectively and on the basis of comprehensive studies.

According to public policy analyst Agus Pambagio, the public need not worry so long as every stage of development complies with applicable rules and standards, particularly regarding environmental aspects, sustainability, safety, and the protection of areas of significant value to the community.

He affirmed that if all regulations are met, environmental studies are conducted properly, and all sustainability aspects are taken into account, the public should have no cause for concern.

“In principle, clean energy development must proceed whilst taking into account the interests of the community and the environment,” Agus said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/9/2026).

He added that geothermal energy development forms part of efforts to provide a cleaner and more sustainable energy source.

Therefore, any public concerns should be addressed through open information, accountable studies, and good communication between the government, developers, and the community.

Regarding worries about the presence of cultural heritage sites around the development area, Agus believes this aspect must form an important part of the planning process.

He said the location of activities must certainly take account of areas of historical and cultural value.

He cautioned that energy development must not disturb or damage cultural heritage sites.

“So long as the determination of the site and its implementation follow the regulations on cultural heritage protection and the findings of existing studies, God willing, it will be a blessing for this nation,” he asserted.
