Planning to Buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max Abroad? Here is How to Calculate Import Duties and Taxes
The arrival of the latest generation of Apple devices, such as the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo, consistently sparks interest among Indonesian consumers to purchase them directly from overseas. The more competitive prices seen in the global market often serve as the primary attraction.
However, consumers need to understand that bringing these advanced devices back to the country involves significant additional legal and financial obligations. Buying an iPhone from abroad does not automatically mean it can be used immediately with local SIM cards. The device must undergo the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration process to connect to cellular networks in Indonesia.
While the IMEI registration process itself is free of charge, owners will be subject to import duties and taxes if the value of the goods exceeds the exemption limit determined by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. Under current regulations, every passenger arriving from abroad receives a customs value exemption of US$500 per person per arrival.
This facility is only applicable if passengers register their devices in the airport arrival area (Customs Declaration). If the value of the device exceeds this limit, the difference will be subject to state levies.
Based on a validated exchange rate of Rp17,714 per US$1, here is an estimate of the costs incurred if you purchase an iPhone 18 Pro Max at an assumed international price of US$1,299. Based on the taxable value, the estimated levies are as follows:
For the premium iPhone Duo model, assuming an international price of US$1,999, the costs to be prepared are significantly higher. The estimated levies for the iPhone Duo are as follows:
Looking at the figures above, the total cost of bringing an iPhone 18 Pro Max into the country could reach approximately Rp26.1 million, while the iPhone Duo could reach Rp41.2 million after taxes. While these prices may still compete with official prices in Indonesia once released, consumers must consider the aspect of international warranties, which may be more difficult to claim domestically.
For those still planning to purchase abroad, ensure you keep the original transaction proof (invoice) and perform registration through the Mobile Beacukai application before landing to accelerate the verification process at the arrival terminal.
