Planes shun Bangkok airport
UTAPAO, Thailand (Reuters): Heavy fog at Bangkok International Airport prevented planes landing and officials had to divert them to this former U.S. airbase, airport sources and witnesses said yesterday.
Both domestic and international planes were diverted from Bangkok to Utapao yesterday morning, witness said.
"When we were approaching Bangkok the captain announced that the airport was covered by fog and visibility was only 200 meters," said a Reuters photographer who was stranded at Utapao, about 175 km southeast of Bangkok.
An air control tower official said the fog covered the airport for about three hours yesterday, forcing eight planes to be diverted to the airbase.
