Plan to legalize gambling opposed
JAKARTA (JP): City Council Chairman M.H. Ritonga said
yesterday that he is against the idea of designating a special
location in the city for gambling activities
"We do not agree with the idea. It is dangerous," he said.
Though local authorities have resumed their fight against
gambling operations, illegal gambling business are still
flourishing, mostly in local hotels, private houses and
warehouses.
"The gambling activities should be stopped and it is not only
the duty of the police," he stated.
City Police face serious difficulties in their efforts to stop
gambling. Despite their awareness of several large-scale gambling
dens in the city, police must first collect strong evidence in
order to successfully prosecute any case. (31)
