Plan to Convert 120 Million Motorcycles to Electric: BRT Boss's Take

The government wants to convert petrol-fuelled motorcycles into electric motorcycles. The target is no small feat, reaching up to 120 million units.

Bintang Racing Team (BRT) founder Tomy Huang assesses that this figure will be difficult to realise in the near term, especially when linked to the current government’s term in office.

“Actually, this conversion programme—if Mr Prabowo says 120 million units, he might be misinformed or it could indeed be his long-term programme. With the current government’s term left at just three years, the programme is somewhat challenging,” Tomy told Kompas.com on Monday (6/4/2026).

Previously, the government’s programme targeted 2 million electric vehicles, including motorcycle conversions in Indonesia.

“Yes, that’s right, that’s 10 percent of the population, assuming that 10 percent follows the electric car model from China to become a trigger for public awareness and change habits,” said Tomy.

“As far as I know, during Mr Arifin’s time, there might be other ideas that Mr Prabowo wants to implement together with Mr Bahlil,” he added.

“But again, if asked to do 120 million within the presidential term’s priority period, it’s not realistic,” said Tomy.

BRT is widely known in the national and international racing world as a provider of vehicle performance technology, including as a certified conversion workshop.
