PKS Demands Full Investigation into Attack on Activist Andrie Yunus, Calls for Intellectual Architects to Be Unmasked
The Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS) has condemned the attack perpetrated by unknown individuals against Kontras activist Andrie Yunus. Mulyanto, head of the PKS Central Deliberative Council, has called for the investigation into this case not to conclude merely at the street-level perpetrators.
He stated that law enforcement officials must investigate the acid-pouring case thoroughly, even to the extent of identifying the principal perpetrators and intellectual architects behind the assault.
“Law enforcement must dismantle the entire network involved in this incident,” he said in a statement on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
According to him, transparent and comprehensive law enforcement is essential to provide justice for the public. Moreover, Mulyanto noted that the public does not wish for the attack on Andrie to end without clarity, as has occurred with previous incidents.
For instance, he alluded to the acid attack against Novel Baswedan, who at the time served as a senior investigator at the Corruption Eradication Commission. He stated that the case still left significant questions about the intellectual architects behind the assault.
“The series of violent incidents against human rights and democracy activists demonstrates that practices of terror against democracy remain at large and sow fear,” said this member of parliament from the 2014-2019 period.
He believed that if such conditions were permitted to continue, they would potentially weaken the courage of civil society, particularly in overseeing justice and government accountability. The PKS, he said, urges the government to seriously resolve the attack case against Andrie Yunus.
“Revealing the perpetrators down to their roots is an important step to ensure the state truly protects human rights defenders and strengthens democratic maturity,” he said.
Previously, Andrie Yunus was doused with acid whilst on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026. Andrie was sprayed with a corrosive solution by two unknown individuals riding a motorcycle.
The perpetrators arrived from the opposite direction to Andrie. Kontras coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that the perpetrators sprayed acid onto the front of Andrie’s body.
After being hit by the acid spray, Andrie collapsed onto the road whilst screaming in pain. Dimas recounted that shortly before the incident, Andrie had just finished recording a podcast titled “Remilitarisation and Judicial Review in Indonesia” at the office of the Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI), Central Jakarta, at approximately 23:00 on Thursday evening.
The corrosive chemical solution struck the right side of Andrie’s body, including his eyes, face, chest, and hands. Part of the victim’s clothing also melted from contact with the acid.
According to medical records, Andrie sustained burns covering 24 per cent of his body. Andrie Yunus also underwent eye surgery as a result of being splashed with the corrosive liquid.
