The decision by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to open member recruitment for people with disabilities has received full appreciation from various parties. One such commendation came from Nabilah Aboe Bakar Al Habsy, Chair of the BPMRD DPW PKS DKI Jakarta and a member of the DKI Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD). This progressive step is seen as a tangible manifestation of an inclusive and equitable government.

Nabilah emphasised that the policy aligns with the mandate of Article 53 of Law No. 8/2016 on Persons with Disabilities, which requires government institutions and state/regionally-owned enterprises (BUMN/BUMD) to provide work opportunities for people with disabilities according to their competencies. “We give the highest appreciation to the National Police for opening up space for our friends with disabilities to serve as members of the Indonesian National Police. This is a real step that shows state institutions can be pioneers in building an inclusive, professional, and just work culture,” Nabilah said in her statement on Thursday, 16 July 2026.

Regarding the initial recruitment phase, which is currently limited to individuals with physical and sensory disabilities, Nabilah acknowledged this as a reasonable starting process and expressed hope that the system would continue to be refined. “Inclusion must be built gradually, measurably, and with professionalism as a priority. The most important thing is the state’s commitment to opening equal opportunities. We are optimistic that the National Police will continue to improve this policy so that more people with disabilities can contribute according to their capacity and competence,” she stated.

Nabilah expressed hope that the National Police’s breakthrough would be emulated by other ministries, state institutions, and state/regionally-owned enterprises. She added that the PKS faction would continue to oversee policies favouring vulnerable groups to ensure no citizen is left behind in development. “We believe that people with disabilities are not objects of pity, but rather subjects of development who have great potential, capacity, and contribution to the nation. When the state opens equal space, they will demonstrate their best abilities to serve society and the country,” she asserted.

Concluding her statement, Nabilah called on all stakeholders to change their perspectives and work together to create an equal ecosystem for people with disabilities across all sectors. “The National Police’s move today deserves appreciation as a good start. Hopefully, more state institutions will follow suit so that the mandate of Law No. 8/2016 is truly felt by people with disabilities. A developed Indonesia is one that ensures every citizen has an equal opportunity to work, serve, and contribute without discrimination,” she concluded.
