PKEKI Launched, 80,000 Village Cooperatives Encouraged to Achieve Energy Independence
The government has launched the Indonesian Cooperative Energy Independence Programme (PKEKI), a national renewable energy initiative based on cooperatives that is targeted to reach more than 80,000 village cooperatives throughout Indonesia.
The programme was launched by the Ministry of Cooperatives of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkop RI) in collaboration with PT Energy Absolute GreenX Indonesia, and is described as the largest cooperative-based renewable energy programme in Asia.
The launch of PKEKI is part of efforts to accelerate national energy independence while promoting grassroots economic empowerment and a transition towards low-carbon development.
“Under the leadership and direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, this programme represents a major step for the nation. By mobilising more than 80,000 cooperatives, we are positioning cooperatives as the main drivers of energy independence, economic resilience, and sustainable growth. This is not just a programme; it is a national movement,” stated Ferry in an official statement on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
The launch of PKEKI comes amid rising global energy volatility and geopolitical dynamics affecting energy supply stability.
Through this programme, the government will develop solar-powered microgrid systems integrated with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
This model is specifically designed for cooperative-based implementation in rural areas, including underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions (3T).
The initiative aims to provide reliable, affordable, and decentralised energy, while reducing reliance on costly diesel power plants.
Additionally, the programme is directed towards strengthening national energy resilience and supporting Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions targets.
By combining a cooperative-based distribution model with measured infrastructure development, the programme is said to have a bankable, scalable, and sustainable framework.
This approach is expected to attract long-term investments from both domestic and international institutions, while strengthening Indonesia’s position as a clean energy investment destination in the Asian and ASEAN regions.
The programme represents a blend of national policy, grassroots economic strength, and global capital flows, making it one of the most attractive renewable energy investment platforms in emerging markets today.
