PKB seeks NU ulema's loyalty
KEDIRI, East Java: The National Awakening Party (PKB) has
asked ulema from the largest Muslim organization Nadhlatul Ulama
(NU) to continue supporting the party in the 2004 elections by
refusing any offers to join other parties.
Deputy PKB chairman Mahfud MD admitted on Saturday that many
parties had persuaded NU ulema to become their executives.
For example, Idris Marzuki, a top ulema in Kediri regency, had
been asked to switch allegiance from the PKB, he said.
PKB chairman Alwi Shihab said the party was continuing its
efforts to consolidate support from NU ulema to strengthen the
party's preparations ahead of next year's elections. -- Antara
