PKB Has No Issue with 5% Parliamentary Threshold, but Warns Against Wasted Votes
The Secretary-General of PKB, Hasanuddin Wahid, also known as Cak Udin, stated that his party does not object to the proposal for a 5% parliamentary threshold (PT). However, he assessed that the magnitude of the threshold must continue to maintain the proportionality of the public’s political representation.
“The proposals from parties regarding a 5% threshold pose no problem for PKB. The important thing is that the spirit remains focused on how the threshold can maintain the proportionality of the people’s political representation,” Cak Udin told reporters on Thursday (17/09/2026).
According to him, the threshold amount must also align with the spirit of the Constitutional Court (MK) Decision Number 116/PUU-XXI/2023. He believes the threshold figure needs to be considered collectively.
“It must be in line with the spirit of the MK decision. That figure needs to be weighed and discussed by all stakeholders to encourage the simplification of the party system to make it more effective, as stated in MK Decision Number 116/PUU-XXI/2023,” he said.
The party also remains open to other options. He stated that the threshold size should be directed towards strengthening the presidential political system.
“While agreeing with the 5% figure, PKB is open to other options as long as they serve to strengthen the presidential political system and affirm the representation of the people within our electoral system. Furthermore, it must be able to guarantee the creation of reliable political stability. Input from various community groups is necessary so that with such a PT, many votes are not wasted; therefore, derivative regulations must be created to minimise wasted votes,” he explained.
Meeting of Political Party Chairmen
Previously, several chairmen of political parties within the government coalition met. During the meeting, they discussed the Draft Election Law (RUU Pemilu), which also regulates the parliamentary threshold.
The meeting of the government coalition party chairmen was confirmed directly by the Secretary-General of the Gerindra Party, Sugiono. In his explanation, Sugiono stated that the party chairmen met recently.
“Yes, so yesterday several party chairmen gathered. Gerindra was represented at the time by Mr Dasco, acting as the daily chairman, to discuss matters that need to be addressed in the context of the election law,” Sugiono told reporters at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (16/09).
Sugiono noted that an agreement was reached during the meeting regarding the parliamentary threshold. He mentioned that his party, led by President Prabowo Subianto, agrees with a 5% parliamentary threshold.
“One thing that everyone seems to agree on, though I cannot speak on behalf of other parties. Gerindra agrees with the 5% PT. As Golkar and PKS also conveyed yesterday, I believe that is what we have agreed upon,” he concluded.
