The Bantul Police have announced that traffic flow at the Piyungan three-way junction in Bantul, previously subject to a stop-and-go system due to rigid concrete installation, has been reopened. The reopening of the route towards the Gunungkidul beach tourist area is temporary, intended to anticipate traffic congestion during the school holidays. “All lanes at the Piyungan three-way junction can now be used by vehicles without any further blockades,” said Bantul Police Head of Public Relations, First Inspector Rita Hidayanto, to reporters on Tuesday (30/6/2026). The route will be open from today until 15 July 2026. After that date, the police will re-implement the stop-and-go system. “However, after 15 July 2025, repairs will recommence with road construction on the northern side,” she stated. Regarding the reason for fully opening the route, Rita explained it was to anticipate the recent surge in vehicle volume, considering the school holiday period has begun and Yogyakarta is a favourite tourist destination. “The reason for returning to normal operations is considering the current school holiday season, to prevent traffic jams,” she said. It was previously reported that the Patuk Police had prepared traffic engineering measures ahead of repairs on the Jogja-Wonosari road, specifically at the Piyungan three-way junction in Bantul. However, this traffic management would be situational. Patuk Police Head of Public Relations, Chief Police Officer Purwanto, stated that the Piyungan three-way junction would undergo repairs from Monday (8/6/2026) to Friday (31/7/2026). The repairs involve the installation of rigid concrete, causing the lanes around the junction to narrow. “With the repairs at the Piyungan three-way junction, it automatically impacts traffic flow in Patuk, as the Jogja-Wonosari road is a main route,” he said when contacted by detikJogja on Friday (5/6/2026). Consequently, the Patuk Police have prepared traffic engineering to prevent excessive vehicle build-up on the Jogja-Wonosari road. “If it becomes crowded up to the Patuk area, traffic engineering will likely be implemented,” he added.
