PIS Expands Maritime Literacy Programme in Coastal Schools
PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is expanding its maritime literacy programme in coastal schools through Ocean LiteraSEA 2.0. The programme focuses on strengthening teacher capacity so that marine and environmental issues can be integrated into the learning process.
The programme’s kick-off took place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung, on 13 May 2026. The event was held in a hybrid format and involved teachers from various regions across Indonesia.
The programme is being implemented alongside the Yayasan Inovasi Muda Indonesia, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education at UPI, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), and BPPMPV KPTK Gowa.
Through the ‘Empathetic Teacher and Interactive Learning Workshop’, teachers from primary, special, secondary, and vocational high schools received training to develop teaching methods based on the coastal environment. The materials provided included the integration of maritime issues into the curriculum, the development of contextual teaching media, the use of storytelling approaches, and experiential learning.
Beyond academic aspects, the programme also encourages the strengthening of empathetic communication and social-emotional approaches within teaching and learning activities.
Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS, Vega Pita, stated that education is a vital instrument in building awareness among the younger generation regarding the importance of preserving marine ecosystems. “Through Ocean LiteraSEA, we want to instil early awareness in the coastal youth that the ocean is a future that must be protected together,” said Vega on Tuesday (2/6/2026).
According to her, the programme aligns with the sustainable development agenda, specifically regarding quality education, climate change mitigation, and the protection of marine ecosystems. The programme is also considered to support the development of the blue economy, which places the sustainability of marine resources as the foundation for coastal regional development.
Since its launch in 2023, Ocean LiteraSEA has reached 69 coastal schools, benefiting over 3,600 students, revitalising 25 school libraries, providing more than 15 maritime scholarships annually, and producing 41 teacher certifications.
By strengthening educator capacity, the programme is expected to expand maritime literacy while simultaneously building environmental awareness among the coastal youth.
