PIS and PGN Synergy to Build Low-Carbon Energy Maritime Ecosystem
Pertamina Group again demonstrates a major step towards a low-emission energy future, this time through a collaboration between PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) and PT PGN (Persero) Tbk. The two Pertamina sub-holdings will synergise to establish a business partnership covering transport for LNG cargo, ammonia, hydrogen, and other low-carbon fuels. This is set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development, utilisation of infrastructure, and maritime transport modes for related products. The MoU was signed by PIS Chief Executive Surya Tri Harto and PGN Chief Executive Arief Kurnia Risdianto last Friday. Also present were PIS Director of Business Planning Eka Suhendra, PIS Director of Fleet M. Irfan Zainul Fikri, PGN Director of Strategy and Business Development Mirza Mahendra, PGN Commercial Director Aldiansyah Idham, and other management. ‘In this collaboration we are talking about optimal value for the Pertamina Group, not just for PIS or PGN,’ said Surya Tri Harto. With plans to own gas transport infrastructure, including floating (offshore), Surya continued, Pertamina is examining investment options so that, in the long term, it is not overly exposed to market price fluctuations. ‘Again, to jointly create optimal value for Pertamina,’ he said. This collaboration represents a strategic step to strengthen synergy among Pertamina Group sub-holdings, while also driving asset upgrade and cargo diversification to support national energy resilience. PGN Chief Executive Arief Kurnia Risdianto said the collaboration is an expansion of the PIS-PGN partnership that has been in place. Since 2024, PIS has carried LNG cargo for PGN to the Lampung FSRU and West Java, as well as the Arun Terminal under a spot charter arrangement. ‘The collaboration we are building is an escalation, expanding to include the ownership, construction, and management of the gas midstream through to downstream sectors,’ he said. As a result, he added, Pertamina Group has mature infrastructure and is preparing Indonesia for the LNG era. ‘Going forward, LNG share will be larger. Consequently, additional infrastructure is needed. We are seeking to develop it so that we are not merely spectators, but also have ownership in this infrastructure,’ he said. Looking ahead, the collaboration will cover transport development, fleet strengthening, and opportunities in low-carbon energy commodities such as LNG, ammonia and hydrogen, together with the supporting infrastructure, to be progressed through a working group to explore concrete projects and long-term cooperation schemes. This collaboration is expected to strengthen Pertamina Group’s synergy in supporting national energy resilience, and to reinforce the Group’s role as a provider of efficient, integrated, and sustainable energy solutions.
