Pirates kill fisherman

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Pirates shot and killed a fisherman in the Balanciko sea near Nunukan last weekend, police said yesterday.

Spokesman for the Nunukan police precinct, Sgt. Misli, said that the midnight attack involved three gunmen, believed to have come from the nearby Malaysian Sempurna Island.

The victim has been identified as Udin Reka, 43, and, Misli said, he had been robbed of his boat's engine, Antara reported.

He said the pirates, armed with rifles, disappeared in a speedboat, leaving the fishing boat adrift with Udin's body aboard. A police patrol found the boat at 3 a.m.

Piracy has often taken place in the area. According to the police, there have been three cases of armed robberies this year.(pan)
