Pilgrims Say Pre-Ramadan Cemetery Visits Serve as a Reminder
The Menteng Pulo Public Cemetery (TPU) has begun filling with pilgrims ahead of the month of Ramadan. One visitor, Rahmat (28), said that making a pilgrimage before Ramadan has become a family tradition.
“It’s become a tradition in our family — before Ramadan, we visit the graves first. We pray for family members who have passed away,” Rahmat told reporters at TPU Menteng Pulo, Tebet, South Jakarta, on Monday (16/2/2026).
Rahmat prayed for his mother and older sibling. He said he was only able to visit today because he had the day off work.
“I’m praying for my mother and my sibling. Because today is a day off, I could only come today,” he said.
Rahmat said he always makes a pilgrimage before Ramadan. For him, remembering and praying for departed family members is important.
“Yes, always — before Ramadan, we definitely visit the graves first, to remember the family members who have passed on,” he said.
A similar sentiment was expressed by another visitor, Rizky (30). He said visiting graves before Ramadan is an annual tradition and serves as a reminder.
“It’s already an annual tradition before Ramadan. Usually we visit to pray for the souls of our parents and family members who have passed away,” said Rizky.
“The moment of visiting graves before fasting also serves as a reminder,” he added.
Earlier, observations at the location on Monday (16/2) at 12.51 WIB showed pilgrims beginning to fill TPU Menteng Pulo in Tebet District, South Jakarta. They brought scattered flowers and water to pour over the graves.
The pilgrims were seen praying for their deceased family members. After praying, some visitors also captured the moment by taking photographs at the graves of their family members.
