Bandung (ANTARA) — The Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) is holding the 44th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO) in Bandung, West Java, from 20 to 22 October 2026.

PII chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said engineers played an important role in ASEAN’s transformation, from developing infrastructure and energy to advancing digital technology and creating innovations that improve people’s quality of life.

“The conference brings together leaders of engineering organisations, engineers, academics, industry players and stakeholders from 11 ASEAN countries,” Ilham said in Bandung on Tuesday.

The conference, themed “Future of ASEAN: Shared Prosperity and Humanity through Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialisation”, highlights the role engineers can play in driving industrialisation and technological progress that is inclusive, sustainable and centred on humanity.

He stressed that technological progress must not focus solely on industrial development and economic growth, but should also create opportunities, protect the environment and benefit future generations.

“Make CAFEO 44 more than just a gathering of engineers. Make it a platform for taking real action, building stronger partnerships and delivering concrete solutions for ASEAN,” Ilham said.

He said cooperation between ASEAN countries was needed to turn the region’s diversity into a shared strength for producing practical solutions.

“Delegates are expected to return home not only with new knowledge and networks, but also with commitments, practical initiatives and stronger cross-border collaboration,” he said.

The first day of CAFEO 44 will feature an opening ceremony, a parade of delegates and awards for figures from ASEAN countries.

The second day will include technical events such as an engineering conference, working groups, workshops, the Women Engineers Summit, the Young Engineers Festival and technical visits to eight locations: the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), state railway operator PT KAI, defence company PT Pindad, the Geological Museum, Bandung City Hall, aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia, pharmaceutical company PT Bio Farma and Bumi Herbal Dago.

The third day will feature environmental and social activities, including tree planting, the Indonesia Spices Experience, a meeting of the AFEO Governing Board and cultural events, before the conference closes with a closing ceremony.

Ilham said Bandung’s selection as host was strategically significant because the city is known as one of Indonesia’s centres for education, research, technology, strategic industries and innovation.

Through CAFEO 44, PII hopes the meeting of ASEAN engineers will lead to collaboration and concrete action in support of inclusive and sustainable regional development.

“The future of ASEAN will not simply be imagined. It will be designed — together,” Ilham said.
