PII Commits to Improving Engineer Certification Services

The Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) has stated its commitment to improving engineer certification services to accelerate the growth of professional engineers and support reindustrialisation. “Reindustrialisation requires more professional engineers in Indonesia because no developed country exists without strong industrial support, so there is no choice but to improve certification services that can accelerate the number of professional engineers in Indonesia,” said PII Chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday. Ilham said his organisation is also committed to improving certification services because, out of a total of approximately 700,000 engineers in Indonesia currently, there are engineers who have not yet been certified. The three parties involved are engineers, users of engineering services, and the public who enjoy the results of engineering work. Therefore, he views certification as necessary for engineers to improve quality while providing legal protection in accordance with the mandate of the Engineering Law. Furthermore, PII Deputy Chairman Agus Taufik Mulyono explained that the organisation will accredit professional associations (HKK). Consequently, he said, these HKK can organise engineering certifications such as the Engineer Competency Certificate (SKI) and the Engineer Registration Certificate (STRI). “By analogy, SKI and STRI certification can be done at ‘home’ within each HKK accredited by PII. This will make the process much faster, measurable, and in accordance with their respective scientific disciplines,” said Agus.
