Bandung (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) and the West Java provincial government have agreed to establish a strategic collaboration to address a range of regional issues, from spatial planning and disaster mitigation to the modernisation of environmentally friendly public transport.

PII chairman Ilham Akbar Habibie said West Java had significant potential to develop technology and national industry, supported by the presence of higher education institutions and high-tech companies.

“We have had extensive discussions with the Governor, and PII will provide full support to help West Java resolve its problems and meet the challenges ahead,” Ilham said after opening the 44th Conference of Engineers in Southeast Asia in Bandung on Tuesday.

Ilham said PII was ready to support the provincial government in addressing development challenges, particularly those concerning urban public transport and spatial planning that prioritises environmental sustainability.

“PII will provide full support to help West Java resolve the challenges ahead, particularly in public transport and other areas,” he said.

Ilham hoped the ASEAN engineers’ meeting would produce collaboration and concrete action to support inclusive and sustainable development across the region.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi said engineering expertise should not be focused solely on large-scale projects, but should also deliver technical solutions that have a direct impact on people’s lives.

Dedi said recurring congestion and flooding in urban areas needed to be reviewed in terms of spatial planning and engineering implementation.

“The spatial plan currently being drawn up by the West Java provincial government will be developed in detail from an engineering perspective, so that it can transform West Java into a model for adequate, environmentally friendly spatial planning,” he said.
