Pig Rice Stall in Palu Mobbed by Residents for Being Too Conspicuous

A pork rice stall in Palu City, Central Sulawesi, has been mobbed by residents after being deemed too conspicuous and disrespectful to the local community. The protest took place at Warung Ajek Tondo in Tondo subdistrict, Mantikulore, on Sunday.

Local community figure Ismail stated that the action was spontaneous, arising after residents gathered nearby and began discussing the stall’s presence. He stressed that the objection was not aimed at the owner’s livelihood, nor was it an act of intolerance as portrayed on social media. Rather, the issue was the stall’s highly visible location on a busy main road, complete with prominent signage, in an area where the majority of residents are Muslim. Ismail argued that such a business should consider the surrounding community’s sensibilities, noting that a similar establishment operating discreetly in a back alley without conspicuous signage had never caused any problems.

Prior to the incident, a mediation meeting had been held at the Tondo subdistrict office involving the subdistrict head, community and religious leaders, the local neighbourhood chief, and the business owner. During that meeting, the owner was asked to fulfil several requirements, including obtaining approval from at least 30 heads of families living nearby. However, by the time of the protest, the owner had reportedly only managed to collect around 10 signatures. Residents are now requesting a follow-up meeting to seek a resolution through deliberation.
