The competition in the pickup truck segment of the light commercial vehicle market is intensifying throughout early 2026. The three established players—Daihatsu Gran Max Pick Up, Suzuki Carry Pick Up, and Mitsubishi L300—continue to dominate, but the top position shifts from month to month.

In March 2026, Gran Max Pick Up reclaimed the lead with sales of 2,919 units. Suzuki Carry Pick Up took second place with 2,739 units, while Mitsubishi L300 lagged far behind at 616 units. However, looking back to the previous month, the competitive landscape was different.

February 2026 proved to be a bumper month for Suzuki Carry. The flagship Suzuki pickup surged ahead with 6,554 units sold, outpacing Gran Max’s 4,458 units. Mitsubishi L300 remained in third with 1,099 units.

Earlier, in January 2026, Gran Max Pick Up started the year as the market leader with 4,925 units. L300 secured second place with 1,061 units, while Carry dropped to third with 657 units.

Compared to the same period last year, the upward trend is evident. In March 2025, Gran Max Pick Up recorded only 2,581 units, Suzuki New Carry 1,507 units, and Mitsubishi L300 1,004 units. This means Gran Max and Carry have both shown significant increases over the past year, while L300 remains relatively stagnant.

From the manufacturers’ perspective, Dony Saputra, Deputy to the 4W Sales & Marketing Director of PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales, acknowledged that one driver of sales is the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme.

“On the other hand, one of our products, the New Carry, also meets the logistics transportation needs for the MBG programme. The volume is quite good and helps stabilise overall Suzuki sales,” Dony explained recently.

Meanwhile, Tri Mulyono, Marketing and Customer Relations Division Head of PT Astra International Daihatsu Sales Operation (AI-DSO), admitted he could not yet confirm a direct correlation between the programme and the sales increase.

“But to be honest, we cannot identify whether this is indeed driven by MBG,” Tri clarified.

In terms of products, all three compete in a similar segment but with distinct characteristics.

Gran Max Pick Up relies on a 1.5L 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i engine producing around 97 PS. The vehicle is produced by AstraDaihatsu Motor in Indonesia and is known for its spacious cargo bed and flexible blind van options. The current price for Gran Max Pick Up ranges from approximately Rp 160 million to Rp 180 million, depending on the variant.

Suzuki Carry Pick Up features a 1.5L K15B-C engine that also delivers around 97 PS, but emphasises fuel efficiency and payload capacity. Produced by Suzuki Indomobil Motor, the Carry is recognised for its long cargo bed dimensions and small turning radius. Its selling price ranges from Rp 170 million to Rp 190 million.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi L300 retains its diesel base with a 2.2L 4N14 engine that is more powerful, around 99 PS with high torque. Produced by Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia, the L300 excels in durability and heavy-duty hauling capability. However, its price is relatively higher, ranging from Rp 220 million to Rp 230 million.

Although L300 has a slight edge in power, market trends indicate that consumers are now more price-sensitive and prioritise efficiency. This is evident from the alternating dominance of Gran Max and Carry in leading the market throughout the first quarter of 2026.

With fluctuating sales patterns, no single model has yet locked in the top position. Competition in the pickup segment appears set to remain dynamic, particularly with the ongoing growth in domestic logistics and SME needs.
