Piano competition winners named

JAKARTA: The two winners of last week's Jakarta Piano Competition are scheduled to be crowned by President Megawati Soekarnoputri in a ceremony at JW Mariott Hotel here on Tuesday.

The jury, presided over by Jayasuprana, named Amanda Subandi from Surabaya as the senior category winner and Jakartan Ferdi Tumakana as the junior category winner.

The two beat 150 pianists aged between 12 and 33 years of age from Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Medan.

A philharmonic orchestra will perform during Tuesday's ceremony as a tribute to the late conductor Yazeed Djamin, who established the piano competition.

As part of the competition criteria, contestants were required to play Yazeed's compositions throughout the three-day event. Contestants in the senior category played Del Voir, while the juniors played Ostinate. -- JP
