KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) does not agree with the idea of using identity cards other than the KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk) for hotel check-ins.

Through its Secretary General, Maulana Yusran, the nationwide hotel association stated that there is no other identity card that is valid for use in hotel check-ins.

“It is appropriate to use the KTP to ensure that the hotel guest’s identity is clear. Who they are and where they live,” he added.

This statement was made by Yusran in response to the opinion of the Director General of the Civil Registration and Population Agency (Dukcapil), Teguh Setyabudi, who suggested that the public use identities other than the KTP for hotel check-ins.

Teguh said that the electronic KTP (e-KTP) has an electronic chip that stores population data, so it should not be photocopied or handed over casually, including for verification needs during hotel check-ins before staying.

This is because hotel check-in regulations generally depend on local government policies, not just the central government.

All levels of government must have a unified voice to issue new check-in regulations so as not to complicate hotels and staying guests.

“Do not let there be conflicts with regional governments because the identity is used for guest security, even though there is indeed the Personal Data Protection Law,” said Yusran.

Yusran explained that the reason guests must show their KTP for check-in is none other than to maintain mutual comfort and avoid acts of prostitution and underage guests.

The KTP check requirement during hotel check-in can facilitate the hotel in ensuring the identity, including the age of the staying guests. That is why, currently, children cannot book hotels on their own.

“Using a KTP is not only in hotels, but it is still requested when visiting offices as identification to exchange access to various places. Even in government offices, it is the same,” he explained.
