Jakarta — The Regional Leadership Board (BPD) of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) for DKI Jakarta projects that hotel occupancy during the school holiday period will rise by around 15 to 25 percent compared with normal periods, especially in popular tourist destinations.

Sutrisno Iwantono, head of the PHRI DKI Jakarta BPD, said the hotel and restaurant industry is basically accustomed to the long-holiday momentum that recurs every year, so preparations have been made on several fronts.

‘In general, the hotel and restaurant industry is used to events that recur every year during long holidays. They prepare themselves in terms of human resources, programmes, and the distinctive activities of each hotel,’ Sutrisno said when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Wednesday.

‘For a period like this, we have not yet calculated the precise upturn, but past experiences indicate it could be between 15 and 25 percent above normal periods, particularly in the favourite areas,’ he added.

Sutrisno also assessed that government support is needed to widen access to areas that are still less popular by improving transport and supporting facilities.

Moreover, he continued, the government should also provide support for tourism operators so they can offer more competitive prices to visitors.

‘Therefore going forward the government must encourage access to less-favoured areas by improving transportation, facilities and infrastructure, and other facilities,’ he said.

‘This includes, for example, providing facilities and subsidies for tourism operators so they can sell cheaper prices to attract visitors to those areas,’ he added.
