Jakarta — A photograph depicting the alleged perpetrator of an acid attack against Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), has gone viral on social media. However, police have stated that the image is the result of artificial intelligence (AI) technology processing and poses a potential risk to the investigation process.

The photograph was uploaded by an account named @Robe1807 on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, 14 March 2026. In the post, the account urged police to immediately arrest the perpetrator, whose face appeared to be clearly visible in the photograph.

In the same post, the account also attached a screenshot from the official United Nations Human Rights Office account highlighting the acid attack case against Andrie.

The uploaded photograph displayed two men travelling on a motorcycle. The rider at the front appeared to be wearing a light blue hat and a black helmet. Meanwhile, the man sitting behind wore a darker blue shirt without a helmet. His right hand was crossed over his left chest, whilst his left hand was not clearly visible.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, ACP Roby Saputra, stated that the circulating photograph had been processed using artificial intelligence technology.

According to him, using AI to clarify the face of the suspected perpetrator could actually hinder the investigation process. This is because the facial features produced could obscure the actual characteristics of the genuine perpetrator.

Several irregularities were also visible in the image suspected to have been edited using AI. For instance, the right shoulder of the rider appeared to be carrying a backpack, but no bag was visible on his back.

Additionally, the shape of the clenched fist at the rider’s right hip also appeared unnatural.

Although the post was deemed to disrupt the investigation process, police emphasised that they remain focused on efforts to identify the perpetrator of the acid attack.

“We have not gone after the person who posted the AI-edited photo. We prioritise solving the acid attack case,” said Roby.

Previously reported, Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, was attacked with acid by an unidentified person on Thursday, 12 March 2026 in the evening.
