HEALTH-MINDED: Residents of the densely-populated Kampung Utan
Panjang in Kemayoran district, Central Jakarta, are known for
their health-mindedness. Some of the area residents yesterday
carried their household waste packed in plastic bags and loaded
them into a jointly-hired truck which will carry the waste to a
temporary garbage dump. The citizens are driven to this by the
lack of idle space for a garbage dump in the district.

TRAFFIC JAM: A member of the civil defense corp directs traffic
on the road leading to the Asrama Haji (Haj Hostel) in Pondok
Gede, East Jakarta, which is notorious for traffic jams in the
Haj season. To alleviate the congestion in the area the municipal
administration early this week issued a circular requiring
public buses to take alternative routes.

WAITING FOR MONEY: Three-in-one kids, as they are popularly
known, wait along the dividing fence not far from the Jl. M.T.
Haryono toll gate in South Jakarta. They offer to ride with
motorists during the 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. traffic restriction period
every working days. Many motorists heading into the restricted
zone pick them up to fulfill the requirement to have three people
in their cars. The youngsters get at least Rp 500 (US 25 cents)
per trip, per person.
