Philippines to host UN council meet

UNITED NATIONS: The Philippines foreign minister was set to host a special UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday on the role of civil society in helping to build peace in nations devastated by war.

Foreign Minister Delia Domingo-Albert said she would chair the session, focussing on the topic chosen by the Philippines in its role as council president for the month of June.

"We would like to highlight how the UN in general and the Security Council in particular could harness the role of civil society in hastening the process of peace-building in various parts of the world," she said.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who met the foreign minister here on Monday, was expected to attPhilippines to host UN council meetend the meeting. --AFP
