Philippines Strengthens Cooperation and Economic Resilience at ASEAN Summit
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Philippines will advance regional cooperation, promote economic resilience, and sustainability while hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related meetings in Cebu City from 6-8 May 2026.
Under the theme ‘Navigating Our Future, Together’, the ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, will address pressing regional priorities, including energy security, food resilience, and the safety of ASEAN citizens, according to information on the official ASEAN Philippines 2026 website on Wednesday.
The summit will be held with the shared goal of ensuring that ASEAN cooperation delivers real, responsive, and meaningful outcomes for communities across Southeast Asia.
The summit’s programme will focus on several key activities for leaders, including the Opening Ceremony of the 48th ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN Summit Plenary Session, the ASEAN Summit Closed-Door Meeting, and the Special Summit on the East ASEAN Growth Area; Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines (BIMP-EAGA).
Beyond diplomacy, the summit will spotlight Cebu’s growing role as a dynamic centre for business and investment, supported by its strategic location, modern infrastructure, and skilled workforce.
The Philippines aims to host a secure, efficient, and forward-looking summit that reflects ASEAN’s shared vision for a resilient and sustainable future.
Meanwhile, several local officials in Cebu have expressed readiness and willingness to host the summit, ensuring that preparations for security, traffic, and venues are complete.
As the current ASEAN chair, President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr will join heads of state from the other 10 member countries of the regional bloc during the leaders’ summit on 7 and 8 May.
‘We in Cebu are ready,’ said Cebu Governor Pamela.
Pamela stated that security preparations are ‘80 per cent complete’, with enhanced emergency response systems and hospitals on ‘code blue’ alert throughout the summit.
She said that rehearsals and trials will be conducted before the arrival of heads of state and delegations.
Delegations from the 11 ASEAN member countries are expected to be concentrated in Lapu-Lapu City, where several key summit activities will take place, including meetings at the newly built Mactan Expo in Mactan Newtown.
Head of the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Nagiel Banacia, said preparations in the city have been underway since December, including extensive information campaigns and traffic management planning.
He noted that road closures will be limited to convoy movements and will be reopened immediately afterwards.
Additionally, the two main bridges connecting Lapu-Lapu to the Cebu mainland will remain open during the summit.
