BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are beginning to attract interest as a transitional solution towards the electrification era in Indonesia. This technology is considered capable of addressing consumer concerns, particularly regarding the limitations of infrastructure for pure electric vehicles. CEO Andry Ciu explained that in the Chinese market, PHEVs have a different character compared to conventional hybrids. According to him, the presence of PHEVs was originally intended to bridge the shift from conventional vehicles to fully electric cars. “Actually, PHEVs were born to facilitate the transition to electrification, especially in areas where infrastructure is still limited. So users can still experience electric vehicles,” he said. Furthermore, Andry assessed that the characteristics of consumers in Indonesia also play an important role in the adoption of electrified vehicles. “In Indonesia, consumers tend to consider many factors,” he said. “For example, why do many choose seven-seater cars, even though daily use is often just for one or two people. The reason is simple, to be prepared in case it’s needed at any time, for instance, when travelling with family or going home for holidays,” he added. This mindset, Andry continued, also applies to electric vehicles. There is still concern when using the car for long-distance trips, especially in areas with uneven charging infrastructure. “There is concern when using it outside the city, especially because the infrastructure is not yet evenly distributed. Moreover, users in Indonesia are not only on Java Island, but also in Sumatra, Kalimantan, up to Sulawesi,” he stated. Therefore, PHEVs are seen as a relevant solution for the current situation.
