PHE Strengthens National Energy Resilience Amid Global Turbulence
PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, continues to strengthen its strategic role in maintaining national energy resilience, not only to meet current needs but also to ensure long-term energy supply sustainability. Amid global geopolitical dynamics, energy supply chain disruptions, and volatility in world oil and gas prices, strengthening the domestic energy foundation becomes a key factor in safeguarding national energy resilience.
“In this regard, PHE plays a role in managing around 27 percent of work areas in Indonesia, with contributions of 65 percent of domestic oil lifting and 35 percent of domestic gas lifting,” said Director of Strategic Planning, Portfolio, and Commercial at PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, Edi Karyanto, during the Subholding Upstream 2026 media gathering at Golden Tulip Holland Resort, Kota Batu, East Java, on Thursday (9/4/2026).
Edi emphasized that long-term energy resilience requires a balance between optimizing current production and building future sustainability.
“PHE is committed to maintaining the sustainability of national oil and gas production through optimization of existing assets, exploration of new resources, and the application of technology to increase recovery rates. These steps are an important part of ensuring sustainable national energy resilience,” Edi added.
Throughout 2025, said Edi, PHE recorded production of one million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBOEPD), consisting of 557 thousand barrels of oil per day (MBOPD) and 2.8 billion cubic feet of gas per day (BCFD). This achievement provides a strong foundation in maintaining energy supply reliability while supporting Indonesia’s long-term energy needs.
To strengthen national energy resilience sustainably, in 2026 PHE is implementing various strategic programmes, including the development of oil and gas fields, implementation of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), exploration of prospective areas, unconventional oil, and evaluation of merger and acquisition opportunities to strengthen the upstream oil and gas portfolio.
In addition, continued Edi, PHE is also preparing for energy transformation through efforts to develop low-carbon businesses as part of the company’s long-term strategy.
“Future energy resilience will not only be determined by resource availability but also by the ability to adapt to the energy transition. Therefore, PHE is promoting decarbonization initiatives for operations as well as the development of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)/Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) businesses,” added Edi.
