PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage/Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCS/CCUS) technologies to support the regional energy transition.

Dannif Danusaputro, Director of Investment & Business Development at PHE, noted that Indonesia has made significant progress in its CCS/CCUS project portfolio during his presentation at the Korea CCUS Conference 2 ’26 in Seoul, South Korea.

In addition to pilot-scale projects, PHE, in partnership with ExxonMobil, is currently developing the first regional-scale CCS Hub in the Asri Basin. The project is designed to be fully integrated, encompassing Liquid CO₂ (LCO₂) transport, receiving terminals, offshore pipelines, injection wells, and storage facilities.

“Our approach is highly structured, where we draw on operational experience through pilot projects while simultaneously preparing the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem for larger-scale CCS/CCUS development,” said Dannif in a press release in Jakarta on Tuesday.

During the event, Dannif also highlighted Indonesia’s vast potential as a regional carbon storage centre. According to government estimates, Indonesia possesses a national CO₂ storage potential of approximately 578 gigatonnes, spread across 20 productive basins.

“The Asri CCS Hub combines massive storage scale, a strategic location, and a complete transport and storage chain concept,” he stated.

“A technically sound storage site must also be commercially viable and institutionally ready. The supporting regulatory framework in Indonesia is already in place, and our collective task is to transform this into an implementable and bankable project,” Dannif emphasised.

Furthermore, Dannif noted that Indonesia’s readiness as a regional carbon storage hub is supported by increasingly mature regulations.

“Through collaboration with stakeholders in South Korea—including emitters, shipping companies, technology providers, and investors—we are optimistic that the Asri CCS Hub can become a priority carbon injection platform that provides added value for both nations,” he concluded.
