PHE Launches 'Lensa Energi' Programme to Support Indonesian Children's Future
For many children, writing on a blackboard is a window to knowledge. But for some, the letters appear only as a blur. They sit at the front of the class, squinting and guessing at what the teacher has written. Unnoticed, vision problems in children often go undetected. Many children consider blurry vision normal, while parents frequently face access barriers or assume that eye examinations and glasses are prohibitively expensive. Yet good eyesight is a crucial foundation for a child’s educational success.
Driven by concern over this issue, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina’s Upstream Subholding, has introduced SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi. This Community Involvement & Development (CID) initiative focuses on improving the eye health of primary school-aged children in the company’s operational areas. Through eye health examinations and the provision of glasses for students with medical indications, the programme aims to support the early detection of vision problems, enabling students to learn more comfortably and optimally.
The programme was launched at SDN 01 Pagi Pulau Kelapa, Kepulauan Seribu, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, involving more than 160 Year 5 and Year 6 students from SDN 01 and SDN 02 Pagi Pulau Kelapa. This marks the first step of an initiative that will reach 15 operational areas of PHE Upstream Subholding Pertamina, covering Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Eastern Indonesia, with a target of over 2,200 students receiving eye examinations.
PT Pertamina Hulu Energi’s Director of Risk Management, Whisnu Bahriansyah, stated that Pertamina’s presence is not solely to safeguard national energy security, but also to deliver tangible benefits to communities surrounding the company’s operational areas. “Pertamina Hulu Energi, through PHE OSES, operates in offshore waters not far from where we stand today. This means the people of Pulau Kelapa are neighbours to our operational area. We believe that a good company is measured not only by production figures, but also by the beneficial footprint it leaves for the community to grow together harmoniously,” he said in an official statement on Friday (24/7/2026).
He explained that the SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme was born from a spirit of combining ecosystem and innovation, an approach that encourages a balance between environmental sustainability and community development in operational areas. According to him, Lensa Energi was chosen because children’s eye health issues are often invisible, yet have long-term impacts. “A child who cannot read the writing on the blackboard clearly often does not realise it. They may be considered less focused or less capable, when what they actually need is a pair of glasses to see the world more clearly,” Whisnu said.
The programme also embodies the spirit of employee volunteerism and collaborative social actions, with Pertamina Upstream Subholding officers directly involved as volunteers alongside local government, health workers, and school staff. The activity uses an Area Based Implementation approach, with eye examinations conducted directly at schools by medical personnel from local health facilities competent in performing eye checks and issuing prescriptions. All glasses provided under the programme adhere to eye health standards.
This activity was carried out in collaboration with the Kepulauan Seribu Administrative Regency Government, North Kepulauan Seribu District, Pulau Kelapa Village, Pulau Kelapa Community Health Centre, and SDN 01 and SDN 02 Pagi Pulau Kelapa. The Regent of Kepulauan Seribu, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, expressed his appreciation and support for the SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme. “I would like to thank PHE and colleagues from PHE OSES who today conducted eye screening and provided glasses for our students here in Pulau Kelapa. It is extraordinary and, of course, very beneficial for us,” he said.
The SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme also supports the company’s ESG implementation by demonstrating real impact, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education). The programme also supports the fourth Asta Cita of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, which focuses on human resource development. Addressing the beneficiary students, Whisnu encouraged them to be proud of wearing their glasses. “Do not be ashamed to wear glasses. Glasses are not a sign that something is lacking in you, but a tool to help you see the world more clearly. Keep reading, keep learning, and never stop dreaming, because the future of this nation is in your hands,” he said.
Through SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi, PHE hopes that children on Pulau Kelapa will not only see the writing on the blackboard more clearly, but also be able to look towards the future with greater confidence. Because when the younger generation grows up healthy, intelligent, and full of hope, that is where Indonesia’s energy will continue to shine. PHE will continue to invest in managing upstream oil and gas operations according to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. PHE also maintains a Zero Tolerance on Bribery commitment by ensuring fraud prevention and that the company remains clean from bribery, including through the implementation of an Anti-Bribery Management System standardised to ISO 37001:2016.
