Efforts to achieve net zero emissions are becoming integral to various industrial sectors, including pharmaceuticals. Companies are now not only focused on increasing production capacity but also on strengthening their commitment to sustainability through concrete actions to reduce carbon footprints and support environmental conservation. One such step was taken by PT Pyridam Farma Tbk (PYFA) through a tree-planting activity as part of the inauguration of the expanded Line 3 production facility of PT Ethica Industri Farmasi in Cikarang, West Java. The event, held on 4 June 2026, involved the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), the company’s board of directors, and various stakeholders as a manifestation of the company’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. A total of 18 tree species were planted, one of which, a Ketapang Kencana (Terminalia mantaly), was planted directly by the Head of BPOM, Prof. Dr. Taruna Ikrar, M.Biomed., Ph.D. This initiative aligns with the ‘One Million Trees Movement’ launched by BPOM on 31 January 2026 to commemorate its 25th anniversary, aiming to encourage the pharmaceutical industry ecosystem to actively engage in greening its working environment. Quoting a statement released on BPOM’s official website, Taruna Ikrar appreciated PYFA’s efforts to integrate environmental aspects into pharmaceutical industry development. ‘Today’s tree planting is a manifestation of environmental conservation as well as the pharmaceutical industry’s tangible contribution to reducing carbon footprints and building a green industry ecosystem,’ he said. PYFA President Director Lee Yan Gwan stated that the company views sustainability as inseparable from efforts to maintain public health. ‘We bring the same spirit this afternoon towards achieving net zero carbon through the One Million Trees Movement initiative. This initiative is also driven by the vision and mission of the tree-planting movement launched by BPOM in 2026. We believe that maintaining health is not enough through medicine and healthcare services alone, but also through a better environment for future generations,’ Lee said during the inauguration of PT Ethica Industri Farmasi’s Line 3 in Cikarang. According to Lee, BPOM’s direct involvement in the greening action symbolises the synergy between the regulator and the industry in building a pharmaceutical sector that is not only innovative but also responsible for environmental sustainability. The inauguration of the new production facility is also expected to run in parallel with the implementation of more sustainable business practices. The tree-planting action complements various sustainability initiatives previously undertaken by PYFA. The company has carried out mangrove restoration in the Pluit coastal area together with BPOM, greening efforts at Mount Munara and Mount Halimun Salak, and supported river conservation programmes through a collaboration with Sungai Watch. PYFA’s sustainability commitment also extends to its international operations. The Probiotec facility in Australia has obtained a National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) rating, recognising its building management oriented towards energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This achievement forms part of the company’s efforts to deliver a sustainable positive impact on the climate. By strengthening its ESG agenda alongside production capacity development, PYFA affirms that the growth of the pharmaceutical industry is measured not only by its ability to meet market demand but also by its contribution to supporting the transition towards a low-carbon economy and a more sustainable future.
