PGN Gagas Pushes for CNG Integration into National Energy Mix
JAKARTA - PT Gagas Energi Indonesia (PGN Gagas) is promoting the utilisation of compressed natural gas (CNG) as part of the expansion of the national energy mix amid the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ ongoing review. This PGN subsidiary believes that developing CNG can serve as one option for the gradual and sustainable use of domestic natural gas-based energy. “We see this not as replacing one energy source with another, but as expanding choices,” said PGN Gagas President Director Santiaji Gunawan. “Society and businesses need access to diverse, reliable, affordable energy sources based on domestic resources. CNG is one available energy option that can be developed gradually in line with government policy directions,” he added. Throughout 2025, the company will supply approximately 4,656,449 MMBTU of natural gas through CNG and LNG (liquefied natural gas) services to various sectors. In terms of infrastructure, PGN Gagas operates 14 Gas Fuel Filling Stations (SPBG) in seven provinces. Through its Gasku service, an average of around 2,200 vehicles refuel daily. Meanwhile, the Gaslink service for industrial, commercial, and SME segments has served over 600 customers, with total supplies reaching 4,067,002 MMBTU throughout 2025. PGN Gagas also possesses gas compression facilities, a Gas Transport Module (GTM) fleet, and other supporting infrastructure to facilitate the gradual development of CNG utilisation. The company states that this development will continue to align with government policy directions, considering economic aspects, infrastructure readiness, and market needs. As part of Pertamina’s Gas Subholding, PGN Gagas emphasises that CNG’s presence is not to replace other energies but to complement the national energy ecosystem. “The more diverse energy options available, the stronger our energy resilience as a nation,” said Santiaji. “CNG serves as one option that complements existing energies within the framework of the national energy mix,” he added. PGN Gagas also expressed readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and other stakeholders in the review and policy development process related to CNG utilisation. “We are ready to contribute optimally as a government partner, in accordance with the needs and policy directions set, to support the realisation of national energy independence and resilience,” Santiaji concluded.
