PGN Develops Circular Economy, 871 Kg of Plastic Waste Processed into Valuable Products
PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (Persero) Tbk (PGN) is expanding its plastic waste management programme based on the circular economy by partnering with communities around the company’s operational areas. Through the Rumah Hijau Nusantara Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, PGN is not only increasing waste processing capacity but also preparing a market for recycled products so that they deliver economic benefits to the community.
The programme is being carried out in collaboration with the Cilegon City Government, Kertabumi Recycling Centre, National Geographic Indonesia, and the Al-Bustaniyah Waste Bank in Cilegon. The collaboration aims to strengthen the waste management value chain, from collection and processing through to the marketing of recycled products.
As part of the programme, PGN handed over a number of production equipment items to the Al-Bustaniyah Waste Bank, including a shredder, an extruder machine, a cold press, a scroll and table saw, and an oven. The assistance is expected to increase production capacity as well as the quality of recycled products.
Over the past two months, the Rumah Hijau Nusantara programme has processed 871 kilogrammes of plastic waste into various value-added products, such as furniture, tissue holders, keychains, prayer beads, and other recycled goods.
Sabri Malyudin, Head of the Cilegon City Environmental Department, said the development of the circular economy needs to be accompanied by strengthening downstream activities so that products made from processed waste have a sustainable market.
“In waste management, the development of the circular economy needs to be accompanied by strengthening downstream activities so that products made from processed waste have a sustainable market,” he said.
According to Sabri, strengthening the marketing aspect is key to ensuring that recycling activities can deliver added value to the community. The Cilegon City Government is also opening up opportunities for collaboration with the Cooperatives Department to expand product marketing through various exhibitions and regional activities.
