PGN and PIS Collaborate to Reduce Emissions in the Maritime Sector
A significant step towards a low-emission energy future has been initiated and demonstrated by the Pertamina Group. This time, through a collaboration between PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) and PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (Persero) Tbk (PGN).
These two Pertamina subholdings are synergising to establish a business partnership formalised in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development, utilisation of infrastructure, and maritime transport modes for products related to low-carbon fuels. This includes providing transport for LNG cargo, ammonia, hydrogen, and others.
The MoU was signed by PIS President Director Surya Tri Harto and PGN President Director Arief Kurnia Risdianto last Friday. Also present were PIS Business Planning Director Eka Suhendra, PIS Fleet Director M. Irfan Zainul Fikri, PGN Strategy and Business Development Director Mirza Mahendra, and other management members.
“In this collaboration, we are talking about optimising value for the Pertamina Group, not just for PIS or PGN. With plans to have gas transportation infrastructure, including floating ones. We are exploring investment options so that in the long term, we are not too exposed to market price fluctuations. Once again, to create optimal value together for Pertamina,” said Surya.
This partnership serves as a strategic step to strengthen synergy among Pertamina Group subholdings, while also promoting fleet enhancement and cargo diversification to support national energy resilience.
PGN President Director Arief Kurnia Risdianto also stated that this collaboration is an extension of the previous partnership between PIS and PGN. Since 2024, PIS has transported LNG 17 times for PGN to FSRU Lampung and West Java, as well as Terminal Arun under a spot charter scheme.
“The ongoing collaboration we are escalating and developing, which in principle covers the development of ownership, construction, and management in the gas midstream to downstream sectors. Thus, the Pertamina Group will have mature infrastructure and prepare Indonesia for the LNG era. Where in the future, the LNG portion will be even larger, so additional infrastructure is needed. We are trying to develop it, so that we are not just spectators, but also have ownership in this infrastructure,” he said.
Moving forward, the collaboration will encompass transport development, fleet strengthening, and opportunities in low-carbon energy commodities such as LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen along with supporting infrastructure. It will be followed up through the formation of a working team to explore concrete projects and long-term cooperation schemes. This partnership is expected to strengthen Pertamina Group’s synergy in supporting national energy resilience.
This synergy is also hoped to reinforce Pertamina Group’s role as a provider of efficient, integrated, and sustainable energy solutions.
