PGN Affirms Readiness, Strengthens Business Growth Prospects and Connectivity
PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) Tbk, as Pertamina’s Gas Subholding, has invited major retail investors to review its natural gas operational facilities in North Sumatra. This initiative is part of the company’s effort to strengthen transparency and demonstrate the infrastructure readiness that underpins business growth in the Sumatra and Riau Islands regions.
The activity provided a comprehensive overview of infrastructure management, supply reliability, and market development potential, which will be further strengthened through strategic projects. This includes support for the construction of the North Sumatra-Riau Transmission Pipeline (Sutri) by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The network development is expected to enhance supply connectivity and open up opportunities for natural gas utilisation in various economic growth centres.
Through its Sales and Operation Region I (SOR I), PGN distributes 147 BBTUD of natural gas to more than 136,000 customers in the Sumatra and Riau Islands regions. PGN’s Director of Infrastructure and Technology, Heri Murahmanta, explained that the region possesses complementary market characteristics, featuring high-volume industrial anchor customers in Batam and markets with high penetration rates in Palembang and Medan.
“The combination of these market characteristics is a strength for PGN in maintaining healthy and sustainable business growth, while creating a customer portfolio with a more measured risk profile,” Heri stated in an official release on Monday (13/7/2026).
From an infrastructure perspective, PGN’s operations in North Sumatra are also supported by a network managed by its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Gas Operation North Sumatera Area (ONSA). This network is integrated with various domestic supply sources, including LNG regasification from Arun and supplies from several upstream blocks, which are subsequently distributed to meet the needs of power plants, industrial estates, and the fertiliser sector.
Heri added that the development of the North Sumatra-Riau Transmission Pipeline will be a strategic step in strengthening gas network connectivity on Sumatra Island. The transmission network will connect the northern, central, and southern parts of Sumatra, thereby expanding the flexibility of natural gas distribution from Aceh to Lampung.
“For PGN, the integration of the natural gas network provides higher flexibility in managing supply while opening access to new gas sources. With an increasingly connected system, the utilisation of domestic gas can be optimised to meet the needs of various economic sectors more reliably and efficiently,” Heri explained.
In addition to strengthening inter-regional connectivity, PGN currently operates a gas pipeline network spanning approximately 1,834 kilometres, serving household, small, commercial, and industrial customers in the northern part of Sumatra. The existence of offtake station facilities, such as Pasar IX, further increases distribution flexibility while supporting the efficiency of future gas network development.
Heri added that strengthening the transmission and distribution network is part of PGN’s long-term strategy to optimise the utilisation of domestic natural gas. This strategy is supported by the integration of pipeline and non-pipeline infrastructure, including CNG and LNG, enabling PGN to reach the increasingly diverse needs of customers across various regions.
