PGI Condemns Escalating Armed Conflict in Papua

The Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) has strongly condemned the acts of violence and armed attacks that have recently escalated in Papua. The Head of the PGI Papua Bureau, Reverend Ronald Rischard Tapilatu, stated that the conflict has resulted in numerous casualties.

He highlighted the shooting of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin, as well as the burning of the AMA PK-RCY pioneer aircraft at Ipdeheik Airport, Yahukimo, on 2 July. This incident adds to the long list of killings in Indonesia’s easternmost region.

According to PGI records, civilians, pastors, pregnant women, unborn babies, and security personnel have fallen victim to various acts of violence. “The conflict has also caused thousands of civilians to flee their homes due to the deteriorating security situation,” he said in a written statement on Saturday, 4 July 2026.

Ronald noted that the loss of lives across various groups leaves more than just wounds for the families. Furthermore, he stated that the ongoing armed conflict in Papua has wounded human dignity.

In his view, every life lost must be regarded as a tragic humanitarian disaster. “Whatever the interests or reasons, whether political or security-related, taking the lives of innocent humans cannot be justified,” he said.

PGI is urging all conflicting parties to cease all forms of violence. Ronald emphasised that the safety and protection of civilians must be prioritised.

“We urge the government to thoroughly investigate all these incidents through an independent and impartial inquiry,” he said.

PGI also requested that those proven guilty be subject to heavy sanctions. This includes enforcement against police officers and military personnel suspected of violating the law or human rights.

Additionally, he stated that the state must respond to the calls for peaceful dialogue presented by the church, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and civil society as a solution. PGI, he noted, considers that the militaristic approach applied so far has failed to produce an outcome oriented towards peace and justice.

“The militaristic approach instead gives rise to prolonged and recurring suffering for civilians in conflict areas,” said Ronald.
