PGE Wins Going Digital Awards, Proof of Geothermal Modelling Capabilities
PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) (PGEO) has once again achieved a global milestone through its exploration function by winning the Founder’s Honors at the Going Digital Awards 2025, organised by Bentley Systems. The award was given for the Subsurface Analysis and Modelling Lumut Balai Unit 3 project, which was recognised for delivering modern, integrated, and data-driven subsurface modelling innovations.
Edwil Suzandi, Director of Exploration and Development at PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, stated that this achievement reflects PGE’s capabilities in integrating digital technology into increasingly complex geothermal exploration processes.
“This award serves as recognition of our efforts in developing subsurface modelling that is increasingly accurate, measurable, and integrated. The use of digital technology in exploration not only improves the quality of decision-making but also helps reduce exploration risks and accelerate sustainable geothermal project development,” he said, quoted on Thursday (30/4/2026).
“This also represents the tangible role of PGE as a world-leading geothermal producer. Moving forward, this achievement will serve as motivation for us to optimise the utilisation of geothermal energy as the backbone of the energy transition, while affirming Indonesia’s geothermal exploration capabilities on the international stage,” Edwil added.
PGE’s participation in the event stemmed from a modelling competition held in July 2025, with the scope of work involving the development of subsurface models using Bentley Systems’ software.
In the competition, PGE’s subsurface exploration team presented the results of the Lumut Balai Unit 3 modelling. This result led PGE to win the Founder’s Honors, announced in October 2025 at the Year in Infrastructure forum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Through an integrated digital-based subsurface geoscience modelling approach, PGE has successfully improved reservoir analysis quality while accelerating decision-making processes.
This approach has also proven to expedite feasibility studies, significantly reduce subsurface drilling risks, and enhance drilling cost efficiency. This demonstrates the significant role of technology in improving data accuracy and modelling at the exploration and field development stages.
The Going Digital Awards is an annual global competition participated in by hundreds of infrastructure projects from various countries. In 2025, there were nearly 250 nominations from 47 countries. The judging was conducted by an independent panel of judges.
From that number, only a limited number of projects received the Founder’s Honors, selected directly by Bentley Systems’ founders as representations of the most innovative and impactful works at the global level. Therefore, this recognition further affirms PGE’s position as a geothermal energy company that continues to drive digital transformation across its entire business chain, including the exploration stage.
